Summarizes services, staff, collections, and expenditures of academic libraries in degree-granting postsecondary institutions in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The report includes key findings on library visits and expenditures. During a typical week in the fall of 2004, 1.4 million academic library reference transactions were conducted. The nation's 3,700 academic libraries held 982.6 million books; serial backfiles; and other paper materials, including government documents at the end of FY 2004. Academic libraries spent $2.2 billion on information resources during FY 2004.
