Presents research revealing that tire crumbs used in athletic fields typically contain volatile organic compounds (VOC's) with carcinogenic potential that are released into the air and groundwater. Based on uncertainty as to what these exposures mean for children's health, as well as the environmental leaching of the materials into the ground water, a moratorium on use of tire crumbs was recommended, as well as caution in the use of existing fields with tire crumbs. This includes not using the fields on very warm days, avoidance by people with respiratory conditions, and further study. Includes 14 references.
