This paper proposes the building of Indigenous learning communities as an avenue to address the limited engagement of Indigenous Australians with education. It explores educational policy and program options for linking families, schools and communities (including business and government) to identify and address local needs through drawing upon local resources. It provides a range of examples that have as their fundamental ideology the reinstatement of the school as the hub of the community, as an institution able to be more responsive to community needs and, as such, more able to effectively support the lives of children and families.
