Evaluates California's Safe Routes to School (SR2S) program, which funds traffic improvement projects designed to improve safety for walking and bicycling to school, and to increase the number of children who do so. The impacts of ten traffic improvement projects were measured through surveys of parents and observations of vehicle and pedestrian traffic before and after project construction. Also measured were changes in perceived safety and safety-related behaviors, the number of children walking and bicycling after the improvements. Five of the ten projects showed evidence of success.
