Abstract:
Presents the laws, regulations, and design requirements needed for educational facilities to meet the challenge of educating students with disabilities. A list of planning and design principles to be considered when building or renovating school facilities is offered that includes creating versatile classroom spaces, minimizing travel distances, integrating general and special education programs, fostering parental involvement, maintaining student dignity, and providing the least restrictive environment for disabled students. Final comments address future design and planning challenges involving outdoor play areas, natural environment study areas, classroom acoustics, building security, classroom design, and indoor air quality.
